There are many opportunities here at Zion. We offer numerous Sunday school programs for each age, lifestyle and interest.
2008 PLAN OF MINISTRY
The backbone of Christian Education is, of course, our Sunday school classes. We have a class for every age group, including 5 very different offerings for adults. See our Sunday school brochure for details of each class and location. However, Sunday school is only one of many ways to engage in discipleship.
Vacation Bible School will continue to be a major outreach opportunity during the summer months.
Relevant resources are available in our growing library.
Children’s church meets once a month during the late service.
The confirmation classes for youth in grades 7 through 9 will continue under the Faith Inkubators curriculum. Confirmation into the family of Zion is generally scheduled for the third Sunday in May.
The Sunday school program for children uses the Firelight Bible learning Curriculum for children in 2nd through 6th grades.
During the week both pastors conduct a Bible study on Wednesday mornings and repeated on Wednesday evenings.
Small group sessions began in the fall. There are at least 6-7 small groups that are meeting with each group focusing on a subject/concern that is significant to that group.
FOR CHILDREN: SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL - BEGINS JUNE 8TH!
The curriculum planned for the summer will be the
Old Testament…stories about Ruth and Samuel.
Classes will be broken down into THREE groups as follows:
Pre-kindergarten & Kindergarten
1st, 2nd & 3rd grades
4th, 5th & 6th grades
Students will stay in their present grade….they’ll move up in the Fall.
During the school year (September - May), Zion’s Sunday school program for children (2 years through 6th grade) uses the Firelight Bible Learning Curriculum. This system has been designed around Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence, which identifies eight ways that people learn, such as verbally, visually, bodily, or logically. Everyone has varying degrees of all these intelligences that act in a mix. The Firelight Curriculum provides varied learning experiences based on these intelligences.
How is this curriculum being used at Zion? The morning begins with a brief introduction of the Bible story to the children by one of the classroom teachers. Each Bible story is focused on for four weeks. The teacher then leads the children to one of four deeper learning stations that each class rotates through over the four-week period. This is where different intelligences are engaged by making the Bible stories come alive through sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. The stations may include food, games, art, storytelling, science, drama, puppets, or music. Activities at the station differ depending on the grade level of the children.
Following the deeper learning station, the children return to their classroom for a quick review of the Bible story and what they have learned. The children end their hour with all the other Sunday school students and teachers in a time of singing. This is where they will be picked up by parents.
FOR ADULTS: The Nursery Sunday school class offers a class with varying topics related to marriage, parenting, and spiritual growth. All are welcome in this class. Parents with children not old enough to attend the children’s Sunday school hour are especially encouraged to attend this class. Children are allowed to play in the nursery while their parents enjoy and a time of learning, fellowship, and support
Social Room Class:
Looking for an adult Sunday school class? Please join an adult Sunday school class meeting in the social room. We look at contemporary issues through the eyes of the Bible.
Parlor Class:
Anyone is welcome; you don’t need to attend every Sunday; you can jump in any time. We have studied a variety of things and will continue to look at scripture, life issues and anything else that may be interesting to the group as a whole. We have couples, singles, young and mature.....a very interesting group of people
Traditional Bible study class:
“Everyone is a student, everyone is a teacher, and most important, everyone is welcome!” Look for this motto on the door of our Sunday school class that studies scripture using Standard Publishing’s weekly NIV Bible study course. This course is a catalyst to inspire discussions that lead us closer to God.
