Property Ministry

The objective of the Property Committee is to maintain and improve the church property, all for the purpose of furthering Zion’s ministry.

Some of the notable projects completed at Zion in 2007 include:

  • The installation of the chairlift to the Social Hall

  • Installation of a new range, range hood and other fixtures and furnishings (working with the kitchen committee).

  • Renovation of the courtyard, an initiative completed by Chris Wright.

  • The hallways throughout the new Sunday school wing and Narthex Hallway were painted by our sexton, Ron Woomer.

  • Numerous repairs and minor upgrades were performed throughout and around our Church Home.

  • Heating repairs and improvements were completed during the year, including boiler repairs and setback thermostats.

  • A new contract was put in place for snow removal.  (We were dropped by our previous service.)

  • Courtyard potholes were filled by a work day team.

  • Assorted plumbing concerns were addressed.

There was some notable lack of activity this year, once again due to lack of funds.  Deferred maintenance includes:

        • Stained glass restoration in the Social Hall.

        • Installation of donated air conditioners in the nursery school.

        • Door closer repairs to the courtyard.

        • Special projects, like a roof over the rear entrance.

The property committee needs two things in the New Year:

  1. Your contributions.

  2. Your participation.

From time to time Zion has a work day.  This fall the work day was advertised two Sundays in advance.  Personal announcements were made at both services the day proceeding the work day.  Total attendance was one volunteer.  We need both your financial commitment and your commitment to volunteer.  We cannot afford to just “point and pay” when our church needs to be maintained.

In closing, I want to thank the handful of volunteers who diligently do maintenance and improvement around the church.  These volunteers take a great load from the shoulders of the committee and the sexton.

2008 Plan for Ministry

The objective of the Property Committee is to maintain and improve the church property, all for the purpose of furthering Zion’s ministry.

A major objective in 2008 will be the restoration of the bell tower and surrounding slate roofs.  This will not be as big an undertaking as the sanctuary renovation not so many years ago, but will involve several trades and hopefully be only a minor disruption in the life of the church.  We are starting to experience some water damage to the inside of the church, so the repairs cannot be put off for much longer.  Many items in the bell tower area need attention.  Brick will be repointed, spouting and valley flashing will be replaced, loose and broken slates will be fixed, and the entrance door will be replaced.  Exposed wood will be given an aluminum shell.  This maintenance will be financed by a special appeal and not be part of the budget for this year.

Just as your own house needs constant attention to keep things in top shape, so does God’s house.  This maintenance will, of course, continue throughout 2008.
